Jacksonville Gains Ground On League-Leading Miami To Headline Week 10 Results

Victory moves Armada FC into second place as other contenders pick up draws
NASL Staff | May 28, 2017
With a statement win at home, Jacksonville Armada FC leapfrogged North Carolina FC to take over second place in the North American Soccer League (NASL) Spring Season Standings. Armada FC gained ground on league-leading Miami FC, which split the points with visiting Puerto Rico FC in Week 10.

Miami's result also opened the door for the New York Cosmos and San Francisco Deltas to ascend up the table, but neither side could find the cutting edge in a stalemate in Brooklyn. FC Edmonton ended its early-season skid with a narrow victory over visiting Indy Eleven.

Jacksonville Armada FC 2, North Carolina FC 1

Zach Steinberger has been virtually unstoppable of late, and the former Butler University man put forth another huge performance on Sunday afternoon. Steinberger scored two first-half goals to push Jacksonville Armada FC past visiting North Carolina FC at Hodges Stadium.

In the 30th minute, Steinberger teed up Jack Blake for a shot, which eventually produced a rebound that the Long Beach native would stick home. Less than two minutes later, Steinberger was at it again, poking Drew Beckie's picture-perfect cross into the net from the right side. The two goals brought Steinberger's tally to six, which is good for the outright league lead.

Blake, who is quickly becoming a big threat on free kicks, nearly made it three when he curled a shot towards the goal in the 83rd minute. North Carolina goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre got just enough on the ball, though, tipping it off the post and away from the net.

Tiyi Shipalane pulled one back for the visitors in stunning fashion in stoppage time, bending a long-range shot over the head of Armada FC goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell to create a nervy ending for the hosts.

Miami FC 1, Puerto Rico FC 1

League-leading Miami FC extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 1-1 draw against visiting Puerto Rico FC at Riccardo Silva Stadium on Saturday night.

The hosts went ahead early in the second half when forward Enzo Rennella scored for the fourth league game in a row. The Italian veteran broke through the Puerto Rico defense and beat visiting goalkeeper Austin Pack low to his left in the 51stminute.

Puerto Rico didn't take very long to answer, however. The visitors' Spanish connection hooked up on a set piece in the 65th minute to draw level. Barcelona youth product Jordi Quintilla's free kick found defender Ramon Soria at the back post for the equalizing goal. While Puerto Rico was unable to find the winner late in the game, a draw against the first-place team was a positive result for a team that is still looking for its first win.

New York Cosmos 0, San Francisco Deltas 0

The New York Cosmos and the San Francisco Deltas stayed even in the middle of the table on Saturday night, playing to a scoreless draw at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

The Deltas continued their impressive road play with another shutout away from home. Marc Dos Santos' men have conceded just one goal on their travels thus far. Cosmos midfielder Javi Marquez came close to putting the hosts ahead in the 50th minute, but the Spaniard's header bounced off the crossbar. Less than a minute later, Emmanuel Ledesma went close, but his shot went wide and into the side netting.

Each side had a few chances down the stretch, but in the end, a split of the points kept New York and San Francisco even on 13 points.

FC Edmonton 2, Indy Eleven 1

FC Edmonton grabbed its first win in over a month on Saturday night, topping visiting Indy Eleven, 2-1, in front of its largest crowd of the season at Clarke Stadium.

Salvadoran international Dustin Corea put the Eddies on top in the 27th minute, firing home from the penalty spot. Corea was involved again as the hosts doubled their lead just before halftime. The set-piece specialist whipped in a free kick that found the head of Canadian international Adam Straith for a 2-0 advantage.

Indy pulled one back in the 80th minute following some excellent play from Justin Braun, who is near the top of the league in both goals and assists. The tall forward headed the ball down for ex-FC Edmonton midfielder Jason Plumhoff, who blasted a shot home against his former club. In the end, it wasn't enough as the Eddies held on for a confidence-boosting win.
