On Saturday night, Shuart Stadium will highlight a potential postseason game when the first-place New York Cosmos host fourth-place Minnesota United. The Cosmos (8W-3D-2L, 27 points Fall; 14-3-6, 45 Combined) have been unbeatable at home so far this year – posting a record of 11-1-0 – and the club hasn’t lost in its last 15 games in New York. The Cosmos’ attack has been clinical of late and was only stopped last weekend by stellar goalkeeping from Fort Lauderdale Strikers’ Bruno, who made eight saves in a 0-0 draw. Venezuelan star Juan Arango has ramped up his attacking prowess, scoring four goals in the last three games, moving his goal total to 11. New York may also get a boost with Yasmani Duk, Andrés Flores, David Ochieng, and Eric Calvillo returning from international duty to bolster the side’s depth.
Minnesota was able to shrug off a three-game stretch of draws – two of them scoreless – and returned to the win column on the strength of Christian Ramirez’s league-leading 14th tally in a 1-0 win over Rayo OKC last Saturday. The Loons (5-5-3, 20 Fall; 10-6-7, 36 Combined) have never defeated the Cosmos at Shuart Stadium and only recently beat New York for the first time. Ramirez scored in a 1-0 victory for Minnesota, which was playing a man down for the majority of the second half, in the Spring Season.
