Miami FC announced the signing of South Florida native Sergio Van Kanten on Friday.

“It’s great to have charismatic and high-energy players like Sergio on board,” head coach Alessandro Nesta said. “Our team is lucky to have such a diverse set of experiences among our players, and Sergio is a great addition given the great opportunities he’s had across the globe.”

The Dutch-American player is typically on the field as a midfielder or striker and has proven to excel in either position. He kicked off his career in early 2002 in Cali, Colombia, with the U-19 team for Deportivo de Cali. Later that year, Van Kanten moved to English side Middlesbrough and featured to the club's U-19 team.

In his time abroad, Van Kanten has appeared for various European teams including the reserve team for Eerste Divisie’s FC Volendam and AF Setúbal’s second-division team Amora.

He started his career in 2007, debuting for the United Soccer League’s Miami FC. This past year, Van Kanten returned to the pitch to lead Miami Dade FC as its captain to the semifinals of the American Premier Soccer League Championship.
