Miami FC has announced its second goalkeeper for the inaugural season on Tuesday with Argentine veteran Mario Daniel Vega joining the squad.
“We’re very happy to bring Vega into our Miami FC family,” Miami FC head coach Alessandro Nesta said. “Vega adds years of international experience to the team having played for some of the top clubs in South America and Europe. His background with one of the most prestigious clubs in Argentina, River Plate, and first division team Anorthosis Famagusta of Cyprus, is the type of high-caliber player we are looking for.”
The Argentine shot-stopper made his debut in 2003 for Club Atlético Nueva Chicago of the Primera B Nacional league. In 2006, Vega and his teammates won the league and claimed the Primera B Nacional title. The 'keeper established himself as a regular starter on the squad and made over 60 appearances for the club before his steady performances caught the attention of Argentine power house River Plate and joined the club in 2007. Vega made 76 total appearances for River Plate and won two titles with the club: Torneo Clausura in 2008 and Primera B Nacional in 2012. Vega stayed with River Plate until the end of the 2013 season and then signed with one of the most accomplished clubs in Cyprus, Anorthosis Famagusta FC. After two successful years with the club where he was nicknamed El Indio, Vega now heads to Miami FC for the club's first season in the NASL..
“It’s an exciting time for soccer in Miami and I’m lucky to be a part of it,” Vega said. “It’s going to be another great opportunity to grow as a player, and I’m looking forward to winning the NASL Championship alongside my new teammates for our city and our fans.”
