Minnesota United is excited to announce the signing of midfielder Manuel Alejandro Vela Garrido. Vela comes to Minnesota after playing for several top clubs in Mexico’s Liga MX, most recently Cruz Azul.

"It's a new experience for me and a new challenge in my career," Vela said. "I know Minnesota is a good place for me and my family. I am very excited to get out on the field in front of the amazing Minnesota fans and win games."

The 31-year-old has an uncanny ability to create chances by winning the ball in heavily defended areas to set up teammates and score goals for himself. Though he usually plays out on the wing, he makes central runs that open up the defense as his team pushes forward. He is an aerial threat in the box and is accurate from distance, making him a valuable part of the midfield.

The Cancun native began his pro career with Chivas Guadalajara in 2003 where he played three seasons, scoring four goals for the club. Vela joined Chiapas before the 2006 season and was one of the key players in the lineup. He made 68 appearances over two seasons for the Jaguars, finding the back of the net 11 times.

Following his stint with Chiapas, Vela made the move to Cruz Azul. He has spent the majority of his career with the club, an eight-year run that includes a Copa MX title and three Liga MX runner-up finishes. He spent a brief loan period with Atlante for the 2013-14 season. By the end of his time with Cruz Azul, Vela had scored 12 goals and made over 130 appearances.

Vela isn’t the only member of his family with a successful soccer career. His younger brother Carlos currently plays for Real Sociedad in Spain.
