The Scorpions have gotten deeper at the goalkeeper position thanks to the arrival of Daniel Fernandes on a loan from Dutch team FC Twente. With his Erevidisie side still getting into the swing of their season, Fernandes is using his time in San Antonio to get prepared for his return to the Netherlands.
Fernandes was born in Canada, but his father is a native of Portugal, which allowed him the opportunity to play for the Portuguese national team. Fernandes was a member of the 23-man roster that A Selecção sent to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Fernandes has also played for clubs in Portugal, Spain, Greece, Germany, and Romania before signing on with Twente in 2012.
“I’m here to bring the level higher and play good football,” Fernandes said of being in San Antonio. “All [of us] are here to get results. I hope I can impart some of my knowledge on the other guys.”
Fernandes joined a Scorpions team that already boasted a pair of quality goalkeepers in Daryl Sattler and Matt Cardone. The competition between the three in training has brought out the best in each and has helped Fernandes quickly find his fitness and form.
“They are hardworking,” Fernandes said. “Juan [Lamadrid] is a very good goalie coach. We can learn a lot from him.”
Fernandes has quickly made an impact in goal for the Scorpions. In three starts, he has already recorded two clean sheets, made fourteen saves, been named to an NASL Team of the Week, and has posted a 0.67 GAA.
“I give my heart for the team. I fight every minute and I love my team,” Fernandes said. “We want to give our all on the field.”
