In 2013, the NASL switched to a split-season format, and the following year brought the addition of The Championship, a new four-team, single-elimination postseason tournament. Earlier this month, we did a piece on The Championship and how it worked. - Many other countries play under a split-season format, including Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras and Venezuela.
- This year, Japan’s J-League is using a split-season format for the first time since 1996-97.
- The NASL began using the split-season format in 2013, but added The Championship as its postseason tournament before the 2014 season.
