COMPETITION STRUCTURE | Comparing League Formats From Around The Globe

The NASL uses a split-season format since 2013, find out how it compares with competition formats from around the globe

In 2013, the NASL switched to a split-season format, and the following year brought the addition of The Championship, a new four-team, single-elimination postseason tournament. Earlier this month, we did a piece on The Championship and how it worked. This week, we're diving into how the NASL's competition format compares to other professional leagues, both domestic and abroad. 

Other Notes

  • Many other countries play under a split-season format, including Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras and Venezuela. 
  • This year, Japan’s J-League is using a split-season format for the first time since 1996-97.
  • The NASL began using the split-season format in 2013, but added The Championship as its postseason tournament before the 2014 season.
