Forward Deon McCauley of NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks scored for Belize’s National Team in the 2-1 loss to Guatemala during Group A action at the Copa Centroamericana (Central American Cup) 2014 on Sunday at Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Tex.
Guatemala got goals from forward Carlos Ruiz and midfielder Marvin Avila in the 26th and 51st minutes, respectively, while Belize’s all-time leading goal scorer McCaulay notched his 17th international tally with 10 minutes remaining.
McCaulay, who has seen action in 11 matches and scores three times with the Silverbacks in 2014, played another entire match to earn his 30th caps (international appearance) with Belize.
Group A action concludes on Wednesday, September 10, at Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium, when El Salvador takes on Belize, while Honduras faces Guatemala.
The top four teams from the Copa Centroamericana will qualify for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The fifth place team will compete in a playoff match against the fifth place team from the 2014 Caribbean Cup for a berth to next year’s Gold Cup.
The winner of the Copa Centroamericana will also progress to the Copa América Centenario, a 16-team tournament of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF national teams to be held in the United States in 2016.
