Rescheduled from last month due to weather is the last match for this year’s Florida Derby as the Tampa Bay Rowdies host the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Al Lang Stadium.  Along with the race for The Championship, the two Florida sides are also competing for the annual Coastal Cup with the Rowdies having won the last four during the NASL’s modern era. Fort Lauderdale, who’s two points from the final spot into The Championship, earned a 1-0 win over the visiting Carolina RailHawks last week.  Meanwhile, Tampa Bay, who trails the Strikers by four points in the NASL Combined Standings, is coming off a 1-1 draw at home to FC Edmonton last weekend.  The Rowdies have won 10 of 14 NASL encounters against the Strikers since 2011 (including perfect 7-0-0 at home), however Fort Lauderdale won the last meeting on August 2, when forward Fafà Picault scored the game-winner for the hosts defeated Tampa Bay, 1-0, at Lockhart Stadium.

Coaches quotes:

“I think our performance at Al Lang has not been displeasing in respect to how the players have gone about their work and tried to garner all three points. Unfortunately, far too often, we've not managed to gain the three points. We're trying valiantly to right that and take all three points from this match against the Strikers to keep us in the postseason race. It's always an exciting match between these two sides and Wednesday night should be no different." – Rowdies coach Ricky Hill

“Every game now is crucial. We have to play our best and get as many points on the road as possible this coming week.  Tampa is a tough team, especially at home, but our guys are playing with confidence now, especially after beating a very good Carolina team.” – Strikers coach Günter Kronsteiner

Two goals from forward Fafà Picault and a game-winner by midfielder Shawn Chin paced the visiting Fort Lauderdale Strikers in topping the Tampa Bay Rowdies, 3-2, in front of 3,865 spectators at Al Lang Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The win was the first for the Strikers over the Rowdies on the road as they also claimed the Florida Derby's Coastal Cup for the first time during the NASL Modern Era.

Defender Tamika Mkandawire gave Tampa Bay the lead in the 11th minute with his third goal of the season.

In the 38th minute-mark, midfielder Darel Russell took a pass from teammate Keith Savage and shot past the Strikers goalkeeper Kamil Čontofalský to make it 2-0 in favor of the Rowdies.

Picault scored back-to-back goals in a one minute span (43rd, 44th) off assists from Chin to level the match 2-2 just before halftime.

In the second half, Chin had the third and deciding goal for Fort Lauderdale in the 56th minute when he fired a rebound off Tampa Bay goalkeeper Matt Pickens who saved shot from Picault.

The result also gives the Strikers their third consecutive victory and have moved into the fourth position in the 2014 NASL Combined Standings (Spring/Fall) in the race for The Championship, the league’s four-team postseason tournament.  Meanwhile, the Rowdies are winless in their last five matches.
