SHOOTING DRILLS


Shooting Drills from USSF "E" Coaching Clinic
These are from the handout provided by Charlie Zarzour,
the USSF instructor, at the USSF "E" clinic held in Huntsville, Alabama in 1997.

 

FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL

 

 

 

ORGANIZATION:

  • One player (A) shoots from one side and then second player (B) shoots from the other side.
  • Progress to one player chipping ball over Goalkeeper (GK) to other player who controls and shoots.

Coaching Points

  • Angled approach to the ball.
  • Non-kicking foot along side ball and pointing towards the target
  • Contact ball with laces.
  • Ankle should be firm, with toes pointed down.
  • Strike through the center of the ball and follow through towards target
  • Keep knee over ball.
    NOTE: Players should shoot a rolling ball by pushing it ahead at an angle before stepping towards the ball and shooting.

 

MATCH RELATED LEVEL

 

 

ORGANIZATION:

  • Three vs. Three plus two goalkeepers
  • Each team stays inside their own half.
  • Keeper serves ball to one of his players.   Player tries to shoot or set up teammate for a shot.
  • Other team tries to block shots.
  • If ball goes out of bounds the other goalkeeper serves a new ball to his team.  Keep lots of balls in both goals.

Coaching Points

  • Shoot early
  • Get ball away from under body with first touch
  • Look up to see Goalkeeper
  • Look Down
  • Shoot

 

 

MATCH CONDITION LEVEL

 

 

ORGANIZATION:

  • Three versus Two with two Goalkeepers and one floater (F) who plays for both teams.
  • Keeper serves ball to his own team who try to score on opposite goal. 
  • All restarts due to out of bounds, fouls, goals, are started by the keepers.

    PROGRESSION:
  • Play 2v2 or 3v3

Coaching Points

  • Create space for a shot.
  • Use opponents as screens by shooting past them.
  • Control ball on the turn so that you can shoot quickly.
  • Combine with teammates to create shooting opportunities.
