The board unanimously voted in favor and also voted
to name the scholarship in honor of former NASL president
Charlie Zarzour as a tribute to his time and efforts
in the name of soccer.
The vote was to make this an annual gift as long as
the league could support it financially. A vote will
be taken each year at the December or January board
meetings to re-new the scholarship.
The scholarships will be awarded based on an essay submitted
by each player about the role that soccer has played
in their life.
Players should be nominated / notified by their coach
or team manager and he/she may nominate more than one
player from his/her U17/U18 team. Nominations must be
submitted to NASL President Johnny Smith. The following
information must be included:
Applicant's
name, phone, mail address and e-mail address.
Name of High School that senior attends.
Name of NASL team that applicant played on in
Fall 2007.
Coach's name and phone number.
Affirmation that applicant has a grade point average
of at least 2.5 out of 4.0.
Affirmation that senior will be attending college
in Fall 2008.

|
THE
ESSAY: |
The nominated player is to submit an essay on "The
effect that soccer has had on my life" or "What
soccer has meant to me" or "The role soccer
has played in my life" or something similar.
The essay should be no more than 2000 words. The essay
should be submitted to Johnny
Smith. The essay should be submitted as a word
processor electronic file such as a Microsoft Word
document or in rtf (real text format).
|
|
DEADLINE: |
The
deadline for nomination by a coach AND submitting
an essay for this year is April 8th, 2008. The
board prefers the nominations be made as soon
as possible. Actual essays may be turned in
anytime up until midnight on April 8th. The
scholarships are announced in May 2008.

VOTING
PROCESS: |
The
essays will be submitted by e-mail from the NASL President
to each of the board members of NASL. The essays will
only be noted as being from a boy or girl. No names
will be attached.
After all the applicant's essays are read by every
member of the board a vote will be taken. Members
will be asked to vote for the top two boys' essays
and the top two girls' essays. They should clearly
label their votes as #1 Boy, #2 Boy, #1 Girl, and
#2 Girl. The essay which gets the most #1 votes will
be considered the winner in each category (Boy and
Girl).
TIE-BREAKER #1: If two essays tie for the most votes
then the essay receiving the most #2 votes will be
considered the winner.
TIE-BREAKER #2: In the unlikely event that two essays
receive the same number of #1 and #2 votes the NASL
President will be asked to cast the deciding vote.
