FC Edmonton Preseason Preview

With NASL's FC Edmonton heading off to warmer climates for the club’s 2014 preseason, there are certain things every player is looking forward to. Here are the top three things that FC Edmonton players are excited for heading off to Vancouver.

The Preseason Matches

This year, the Eddies will play five preseason friendlies against top quality teams in the Vancouver area. Starting on March 19 against the Trinity Western Spartans, followed by games against Simon Fraser University, the Abbotsford Selects, and University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on March 22, 26, 29 respectively. The final match of preseason will take place on April 1 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

“Obviously I’m excited for the games,” said Mallan Roberts, returning FC Edmonton central defender. “Especially playing against Vancouver. It will be a good test for us to see how we compare against a higher level team and will be a great way to prepare for our season opener against Tampa Bay.”

New Surroundings

The squad has been training in Edmonton and indoors for the last three weeks, so everyone is looking forward to being able to take in the fresh BC air and do some sprint training across a full length field while on the road. Not to mention the sight of some green grass after a very snowy winter in Alberta. It’s safe to say that everyone is looking forward to a little change of scenery for a few weeks.

“I’m excited just to see Vancouver,” said Albert Watson, FC Edmonton’s captain and central defender. “I heard great things about it from the lads that went last year and I’m excited that I am healthy enough to go this season.”

Practice, Practice Practice!

No matter if it’s drills, training for a match or building up fitness, every player is looking forward to getting into shape for the season. With sessions every day, the Eddies will look to be in match fit by the time the first North American Soccer League (NASL) game roles around on April 12.

“I am looking forward to practicing my shooting,” said central midfielder Ritchie Jones. “In addition to getting into shape for full 90 minute matches, I’m certainly looking forward to all the practice time.”
