The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced the signing of midfielder Shawn Chin for the 2014 NASL campaign.
Chin, 24, grew up in Miami and attended Felix Varela High School, where he was named Miami-Dade County Player of the Year in 2007 as his school's leading scorer. He started his college soccer career Boston College before transferring to the University of South Florida prior to his junior year.
"Shawn Chin is a local player with professional experience that our coaching staff has targeted for our club since last Fall," said Strikers Managing Director Tim Robbie. "His signing reinforces our commitment to identify and acquire local talent for our team."
The Miami native joins several players on the Strikers roster with local ties. Gonzalo De Mujica, Mark Anderson, Manny Gonzalez, Aly Hassan, Darnell King and Martin Nunez all played youth or collegiate soccer in South Florida.
Chin is no stranger to the North American Soccer League (NASL), having signed his first professional contract with FC Edmonton in 2011. He joined the Minnesota Stars (now Minnesota United FC) in 2012 and spent last season with now-defunct USL Pro side VSI Tampa Bay FC. In 2008, Chin made two appearances for the United States Under-20 National Team.
