The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced that Brazilian defender Rafael Alves has re-signed with the club for the 2014 North American Soccer League (NASL) season.
The Strikers originally signed Alves prior to the 2013 Fall season. The big Brazilian stepped right into the starting lineup and impressed, forming a formidable partnership with Stefan Antonijevic in the center of defense.
"We feel that Rafa is one of the top center backs in our League,” said Strikers Managing Director Tim Robbie. “His steady play on our back line was a major factor in our club's defensive success during the 2013 Fall campaign."
Alves is the 12th player from the 2013 roster to re-sign for the upcoming season. He was the only field player to play all 1,260 minutes of the Fall season for the Strikers.
Prior to joining the Strikers, Alves spent time in the USL Premier Development League (fourth division) with amateur side Ocala Stampede. He also played in his native Brazil with Boa Esporte, Ituano FC and Goiás before coming to the States.
