FC Edmonton 0 New York Cosmos 1

A first half goal by Sebastian Guenzatti proved to be the game winner as the NY Cosmos defeated FC Edmonton 1-0 on Saturday night at Clarke Stadium.

FC Edmonton played its second game of the 2014 North American Soccer League (NASL) season and first on home turf in the 2014 Canadian Tire Home Opener.

Mads Stokkelein received a throw-in by Ayoze, turned on his defender and made an endline run. The Norwegian forward crossed to the near post where an unmarked Guenzatti flicked past Eddies goalkeeper John Smits in the 37th minute for the only goal the defending NASL champions needed.

Diomar Diaz attempted to double the Cosmos advantage, bending a shot toward the far post that Smits parried away for a huge save.

The Cosmos, which opened the season with a 4-0 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks Sunday at home last week, had the first quality scoring chance of the first half when Marcos Senna set up a free kick from 30 yards out.

But the midfielder’s attempt went over the wall and right into Smits in the ninth minute.

FC Edmonton, which played the Tampa Bay Rowdies to a 1-1 draw last week, had their first scoring chance seven minutes later when Michael Nonni made a big run down the right flank and crossed to an open Frank Jonke in front of goal. His header attempt was off target.

Danny Szetela nearly capitalized on an Edmonton defensive misplay, but his low shot toward the far post was pushed away by Smits for another Cosmos corner in the 50th minute. Seven minutes later, the Eddies were inches close to scoring an own goal.

Jimmy Maurer, who wasn’t tested often, earned his second consecutive clean sheet. His best save came in the 69th minute when he denied Jonke, who muscled his way into the box, at the near post.
