2014 NASL Player Combine Kicks Off On Friday

More Than 80 Invited Players From 23 Countries Scheduled To Participate In Three-day Event At University Of California Irvine

More than 80 invited players from 23 countries spanning five continents will participate at this weekend’s 2014 North American Soccer League Player Combine at the University of California, Irvine from January 24 to 26.

In addition to homegrown standouts from the NASL territories of Canada and United States, players will attend from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, El Salvador, England, France, Gambia, Ghana, Greece, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands, Philippines, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain and Sweden.  Their common goal when the Combine kicks off on Friday is to earn a place at an NASL team preseason training camp and ultimately a professional contract.

Casting a watchful eye over the elite roster of domestic and international players will be former U.S. Men’s National Team Assistant Coach Ralph Perez, who is working alongside each NASL team’s coaches as well as group of experienced college coaches to coordinate the league’s first foray to the west coast to search for talent.

“The NASL is a tremendous league and I think the coaches will enjoy the Combine and we will have good weather and facilities and I really feel that the players will perform on that stage,” said Perez.  “We have a great staff in place to organize the players and put them in the right positions in a competitive environment to give them an opportunity to impress the watching NASL coaches.”

Following the arrival of coaches and all invited players, the NASL Combine will commence at UC Irvine, with two consecutive days (Jan. 24, 25) of tripleheader matches along with training sessions from 10am to 11.30am, 12pm to 1.30 pm and from 2pm to 3.30 pm.

After the coaches’ evaluations, the NASL Combine concludes with full and small sized game for those invited to participate in the second phase on Sunday, Jan. 26 from 9am to 10.30am.

This will be the fourth time the NASL has held a combine and the first ever on the west coast, which has previously led to several players earning professional contacts, including Mark Anderson of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, who was the third top goal scorer in 2012, and Tampa Bay Rowdies defender Jordan Gafa.
