Preseason Game Preview: Tampa Bay Rowdies vs. Saint Leo

The NASL's Tampa Bay Rowdies will face the hosts Saint Leo University in a 2014 preseason on Saturday, March 29, at Mitchell Park in New Port Richey, Fla. at 7 pm ET.

The Rowdies will have 24 signed players and three trialists available for Saturday’s match.

Scouting the Lions
A member of the NCAA Division II’s Sunshine State Conference, Saint Leo went 13-2-2 overall in 2013, reaching the conference semifinals and qualifying for the NCAA Division II Tournament. They were eliminated from the tournament in the first round by West Florida after a penalty kick shootout.

Maximilian Schulze-Geisthovel led the Lions in scoring as a freshman, netting 11 goals in 17 matches. Manuel Schoenhuber served as Saint Leo’s starting goalkeeper in 2013, recording a 1.01 goals against average in 17 starts.

Rowdies Notes
The Rowdies are 3-1-0 this preseason following Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Tampa Marauders. Evans Frimpong, Kyle Clinton and Brian Shriver all scored in the match, in addition to trialist Willie Hunt.

Goalkeeper Matt Pickens, signed this week from Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution, joined training Thursday and will be eligible for selection against Saint Leo. Pickens has played 11 professional seasons, including 10 in Major League Soccer. He spent the last five seasons with the Colorado Rapids, where he made 116 appearances for the club, including a 2-1 MLS Cup victory over FC Dallas in 2010. Pickens holds the Rapids’ franchise records in career games in goal (116), shutouts (29), and wins (41). The goalkeeper has had 40 shutouts and a career goals-against average of 1.25.

Defender Willie Hunt will be joined by defender Linval Lewis and midfielder Cardel Benbow, brining up the total number of trialists to three.
