Two of Edmonton’s soccer powerhouses will collide on Tuesday, August 26 when the University of Alberta Golden Bears host FC Edmonton in a friendly at Foote Field.
The Bears and FC Edmonton will kick off at 7:00 pm on the premier grass pitch at Foote Field. Tickets, available as of August 11th, are available for $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, while children under the age of six are free of charge. Tickets can be found online (www.bears.ualberta.ca) as well as at the door or by calling 780-492-BEAR.
“We have built a terrific relationship with the University of Alberta since the foundation of FC Edmonton,” said FCE head coach Colin Miller. “Len Vickery (U of A Golden Bears head coach) has done a terrific job with the team during his years at the U of A and we are happy to help them with this fundraiser for their program. The team is looking forward to the game and looking forward to partnering with the soccer community.”
FC Edmonton just finished a busy three match North American Soccer League (NASL) schedule, collecting five points out of a possible nine. The Eddies currently sit at a 3-4-8 combined record since the start of the 2014 NASL season and hold one of the lowest goals against average in the league. FC Edmonton will look to showcase FCE Academy talent combined with First Team players in this match up against the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
While the Bears have played FC Edmonton’s Academy squad on a number of occasions, this will be the first meeting between the U of A and the NASL program.
Last season, the Bears finished the Canada West season in second place in the Prairie Division. The U of A soccer program, which has a history going back to 1913, is one of the stronger programs in Canada West and CIS men’s soccer. To date, the program has captured four national championship titles (1972, 1979, 2003, 2006) as well as 10 Canada West titles, with the last one coming in 2011. The program holds a 230-94-91 all-time record in Canada West play, as well as a 343-163-118 overall record, which includes playoffs and pre-season play.
The Golden Bears begin their 2014 Canada West season on September 6th when they host the Winnipeg Wesmen at Foote Field.
