On Thursday evening, a few lucky prospective season ticket holders of the San Antonio Scorpions got to hear the voices of their heroes clad in red and black over the phone as the drive for a repeat moves closer to its beginning.
Among those trying to sell the people of San Antonio on their local club was one of the newest Scorpions -Â midfielder Pablo Cruz.
“I'll tell them that we are going to win another championship and that they should come out and see us,†Cruz said. “We are going to play some beautiful soccer.â€
A year ago Cruz got to see just how beautiful the Scorpions can play soccer from the opposition's point of view when he was a member of the Atlanta Silverbacks. Cruz and the Silverbacks went 0-3 against the Scorpions in 2014 as San Antonio outscored Atlanta 5-2 on the season.
Now, Cruz has traded the red of the Silverbacks for the red (and black) of the San Antonio Scorpions. Instead of being on the opposing side, Cruz will be the conduit from the Scorpion defense to the offense.
“From what I saw, the Scorpions were a great team last year,†Cruz said. “I feel me being part of the Scorpions now that all the guys are motivated, they want to repeat as champions. I want to bring energy, motivation. I want to win a championship just like they did last year.â€
Cruz took to the phone lines to sell the people of San Antonio on why they should come to the Scorpions games week in and week out. It will remain to be seen on April 4, when they take the field for the first North American Soccer League (NASL) game of the season, how many people bought into the Scorpions because of Cruz’s efforts.
“We want to perform well for the fans,†Cruz said of the upcoming season in which he will try and help the Scorpions keep hold of the Soccer Bowl. “The fans are part of us.â€
