Small Sided Games

This past year all 55 Youth Soccer State Directors of Coaching, and National Team Head Coaches, Bruce Arena and April Heinrichs endorsed a national effort to implement "Small Sided Games". In our region (Region III) of US Youth Soccer all the state presidents have agreed to support this effort.

Tom Goodman, USYS National Director of Coaching Education will be on tour of the state of Alabama and will be offering FREE coaching education clinics in May.  MORE INFORMATION

Why Small-Sided Games?
by Tom Goodman

As the newly appointed US Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Education, veteran youth coach and father of three adult children, who used to be little soccer players, I have thought long and hard about the answer to the question, "Why Small-Sided Games?"

Let me make sure that everyone understands the meaning of "Small-Sided Games". These are soccer games with fewer players competing on a smaller sized field. These are fun games that involve the players more because one ball is being shared by fewer players.

All ages can play "Small Sided Games", but it has a definite developmental impact on our younger soccer players. My recommendations for "number of players" at the various age groups are as follows:

U6      3 against 3 no goal keepers
U8      4 against 4 no goal keepers
U10    6 against 6 with goal keepers
U12    8 against 8 with goal keepers
U13+ 11 against 11 with goal keepers

Here are some of the reasons why I believe we, as soccer coaches, administrators and parents must guarantee that our young soccer players play small-sided games:

  1. Because we want our young soccer players to touch the soccer ball more often and become more skillful with it! (Individual technical development)
  2. Because we want our young soccer players to make more, less-complicated decisions during the game! (Tactical development)
  3. Because we want our young soccer players to be more physically efficient in the field space they are playing in! (Reduced field size)
  4. Because we want our young soccer players to have more individual teaching time with the coach! Less players on the field and less players on the team will guarantee this! (Need to feel worthy…need to feel important)
  5. Because we want our young soccer players to have more, involved playing time in the game! (More opportunity to solve problems that only the game presents)
  6. Because we want our young soccer players to have more opportunity to play on both sides of the ball! (More exposure to attacking and defending situations)
  7. Because we want our young soccer players to have more opportunities to score goals! (Pure excitement)

These are the reasons why we adults must foster "Small-Sided Games" in our youth soccer programs. The "Small-Sided" environment is a developmentally appropriate environment for our young soccer players. It’s a FUN environment that focuses on the young soccer player.

It just makes sense…doesn’t it?

Lisa Howe takes Conference Coach of the Year

Macon, Ga.--Jacksonville State's head soccer coach Lisa Howe, who coached the Gamecocks to a 12-5-1 record this season and a fourth place finish in the Atlantic Sun Conference, has been named the A-Sun Coach of the Year. JSU finished ninth last year and preseason picked seventh in the league this year.

"I think being named coach of the year, speaks well of our team," said Howe. "We didn't get a lot of individual players named all conference this year, like UCF and Florida Atlantic because they have several good individual athletes, but we have a good team. With people like Jane Little who does all of the dirty work in the midfield and our defense plays with respectability and gets shutouts. Also people like Kristen Fleeger, who does so much for us, get overlooked sometimes and I feel this is how all of the hard teamwork gets rewarded."

This is Howe's eighth season at Jax State and this year marks the Gamecocks best overall winning percentage (.694).

Senior Emily Hulburt was named to the First Team All-Conference, scoring six goals and recording five assists on the year.

Also, JSU's longtime defensive anchor Cecelia Lounder was named Second Team All-Conference, while Amanda Stephens rounded out the Gamecock honors being named to the All-Freshman team. Stephens has a 1.10 goals against average for JSU.

"We have a lot of players on our team who score goals, so our statistics are spread throughout with Angela Tribble and Ashley Martin being our top two scorers. We don't have just one person scoring or only one person playing defense. It is a total team effort," said Howe.

Welch Independent Rookie of the Year

Birmingham, Ala. - Birmingham-Southern freshman forward Ashley Welch has been named 2002 NCAA Division I Independent Rookie of the Year. Welch was joined on the All-Independent Team by teammate Megan Black. The team consists of fourteen players representing seven of the nation's 10 Division I independent programs.

Welch, a Huntsville native who led Huntsville High to back-to-back Class 6A State Championships, led BSC with seven goals this fall. She played in all 18 Panther games, recording 15 points with a .620 shots-on-goal percentage, and posted two goals in a game twice this season.

Black, a sophomore from Clinton, Miss. was chosen to the team for her outstanding play as a defender for Keidane McAlpine's squad. She started all 18 games this season, recording one goal in 17 shots and six shots-on-goal. Her defense also helped BSC to three shutouts this season.

McAlpine's Panthers finished the 2002 season 5-11-2 despite losing nine seniors from 2001 and fielding a team with 16 new faces.

The 2002 NCAA Division I All-Independent Team is selected by a vote of Division I Independent head coaches and sports information directors. The team was selected from 10 Division I Independent teams which includes: Alabama A&M, Birmingham-Southern College, Centenary College, Colorado College, Delaware State, Fresno State, Howard University, IUPU-Fort Wayne, Lipscomb, and South Carolina State.

UAB Announces 2003 Men's Soccer Spring Schedule
Blazers will play six games in spring season

Feb. 28, 2003

Men's Soccer Contact: Aaron Jordan

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's soccer team released its 2003 spring schedule, according to an announcement made by head coach Mike Getman. The Blazers will play six games in the next two months on West Campus Field.

The Blazers have already played one game when they travelled to Dallas, Texas to take on the Dallas Burn of the MLS. In what was a hard fought battle, UAB dropped that game by a score of 2-0.

"I think this is a good schedule which will help us get ready for the upcoming season," Getman said. "We play several local teams and they will present us with a tough challenge. Although I was not pleased with the outcome, I was happy with the way we played against the Dallas Burn."

The Blazers will open the spring season on West Campus Field when they host the UAB Challenge on Sunday, March 16. UAB will face crosstown rival Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m., followed by a 3:15 p.m. match against Georgia State. On Saturday, March 22, the Blazers will play another two games when they take on Mobile (2 p.m.) and the University of Montevallo (4:30 p.m.).

The team will then play two more games in April. On April 12, UAB will host a 7-on-7 tournament which will last all day. The Blazers will close out the spring season on Saturday, April 19, at 4 p.m. when they play the annual Alumni game on West Campus Field.

New Single Game State Scoring Record

In the recent Pinson Valley High School Boys game against West End (11-1) PVHS Junior Robbie Barron scored 9 of the 11 goals which we believe is a new a state record. The old record was 8 in a game shared by Tommy Hassell of St. James in 2001 and state scoring record holder Jason McLaughlin of Wetumpka in 2000.

Notes concerning Try-outs and Illegal Recruiting

With the high school soccer season reaching its mid-point many clubs will begin to get their try-out schedules lined up for the 2003 Fall season. We have had several questions from NASL members concerning what constitutes illegal recruiting.
Several years ago the North Alabama Soccer League could address and make decisions regarding what constituted illegal recruiting. But even then it was a somewhat vague rule. Our understanding is that now, since the advent of the new state league play, NASL no longer governs illegal recruiting. It is a state issue which can only be addressed by ASA (AYSA). It’s not mentioned in the NASL by-laws or constitution. NASL can address matters of ethics but since illegal recruiting is now a state issue I doubt the NASL Board would want to address it at all unless there was a clear cut case – which matters of illegal recruiting often aren’t.
With that in mind here are the rules regarding recruitment. According to the Alabama Youth Soccer website no recruiting is allowed until May 27th, 2003. This year May 27th is the Tuesday following the Federal Holiday for Memorial Day and was selected so that teams could still participate in Memorial Day tournaments without pressure.

The rules regarding recruiting both legal and illegal are somewhat vague. According to AYSA the definitions are:

RECRUITING - The process of attracting players to join a team.

RECRUITING, IMPROPER (Poaching) - Any attempt to attract players to join a team using any method, which violates AYSA recruitment rules.

Only Division I, II and III teams can be recruited. The use of tryouts, invitations, recruiting or any like process within Division IV (Rec) is prohibited. Division IV teams are formed by a draft system and any evaluation process is for the sole purpose of making teams equitable within the in-house league.
Illegal recruiting is covered in the ASA State League Operating Rules – section 3:09:13. I have copied the section below. Of particular interest is that players are registered for a seasonal year – not spring or fall – but a whole seasonal year and that recruiting is not allowed until May 27th, 2003 for the upcoming 2003 fall season.

3:09:13 Illegal Recruiting

1. ILLEGAL RECRUITING:
Teams and clubs or their representatives are not permitted to use the tryout process as a means to coerce or recruit players from other teams /clubs from sanctioned or unsanctioned teams within the boundaries of AYSA prior to the start of the aforementioned “try-out window” described in 3:09:06. Any group or individual who attempt to circumvent or alter this policy will automatically be brought before the Disciplinary Board of the LOC for consideration of unethical practices and penalty. Recruiting or attempting to recruit any player or player’s parents or guardians with offers of material goods, gifts, free trips, scholarships or similar benefits are illegal recruiting. Nothing herein shall prohibit teams or clubs from helping players with fees and equipment when documented financial need exists.

2. PLAYER RECRUITING DURING SEASONAL YEAR:
Recruiting or attempting to recruit any player, or player’s parents or guardians to leave a USSF team with which the player is registered for the current seasonal year in order to play with another USSF team during the seasonal year is illegal recruiting. A player is registered with an AYSA team for a full seasonal year when the signed player pass card, fees, and USYSA USSF registration signed by the parent(s)/guardian(s) are submitted to AYSA as part of an AYSA team Roster form approved by the State Registrar.

3. TEAM RECRUITING DURING SEASONAL YEAR:
Recruiting or attempting to recruit any team to leave an AYSA club with which the team is affiliated for the current seasonal year in order to play with another USYSA USSF soccer club during the seasonal year is illegal recruiting.

4. INDIVIDUAL PLAYER/TEAM RECRUITMENT/TRYOUTS:
Any effort to tamper with a player’s standing on an official AYSA team or an effort to move a team from one AYSA club to another or to hold tryouts for a team during the seasonal year shall be a breach of ethical conduct and be dealt with by the LOC Disciplinary Committee and the AYSA board.

5. ILLEGAL CONTACT:
Coaches, team administrators, or agents including parents and players acting as such, may not phone, write, or otherwise directly contact a player or team outside the set tryout period as set by the LOC each year, in order to solicit them for future participation in their program. General public means of distributing information such as advertisements, flyers, website postings, and other common means of announcement are appropriate. Any effort to manipulate these rules may be interpreted as illegal recruiting and will be penalized as such.

6. DISCIPLINARY HEARING:
Allegations of illegal recruiting may be subject to a hearing by the Disciplinary Committee of the LOC.

7. DISCIPLINE:
Any individual or club found guilty of illegal recruiting shall be subject to discipline by the Disciplinary Committee of the LOC.

If there is any question about whether what your club or team is currently doing or is planning on doing would be considered illegal recruiting please closely read the rules at http://www.alabamayouthsoccer.org/documents/leaguerulesfinalcorrected.doc or contact ASA directly.

Bend It Like Beckham

Check out the latest soccer movie.  This is a must-see inspirational movie for young female soccer players. A great movie for girls teams to see together as a team function.
A new comedy about bending the rules to reach your goal, Bend It Like Beckham explores the world of women's football, from kick-abouts in the park to free-kicks in the Final. Set in Hounslow, West London and Hamburg, the film follows two 18 year olds with their hearts set on a future in professional soccer. Heart-stopping talent doesn't seem to be enough when your parents want you to hang up your football boots, find a nice boyfriend and learn to cook the perfect chapatti.
