Gerardo Torrado arrived in Indy at just the right time last year.

While he didn’t play in the match, he watched on as Indy Eleven pulled off the Miracle at The Mike, scoring the necessary goals to pip the New York Cosmos to the 2016 Spring Season title. Forward Eamon Zayed scored a hat trick in the 4-1 victory. When the final whistle blew, fans at Carroll Stadium stormed the field to culminate the memorable night.

“It made a lot of sense [to join this team] watching these guys play and getting the goal they were looking for and how the fans enjoyed it,” Torrado told NASL.com about that night. “It was great to be there and to feel all that emotion.”

That positivity carried the Boys in Blue all the way to The Championship Final, remaining near the top of the table throughout the Fall Season. The club was also unbeaten at home in 2016.

The club, though, fell at the last hurdle, losing to the Cosmos in a penalty shootout in November. With the vast majority of players returning, sprinkled with some youthful new signings, Torrado believes the side has what it takes to get back to the title game.

“It’s about taking or thinking about what we did wrong to learn from them and improve on them,” he said. “We want to be there again and win it. To reach that goal we have to work hard day by day and game by game. We have to do the right things and the easy things in soccer.”

While Torrado, who played well over 100 games for Mexico on the international stage, may be looked to as a leader during his first full season with the club, he believes it will take each and every player to lead the club in the right direction.

“Leadership should be shared with all teammates and I think with this team we have that,” he said. “We have a lot of teammates that are a really important part of the game and they know they have to be a part of that leadership.”
