The New York Cosmos announced today the signing of winger Eugene Starikov, ahead of the 2017 NASL season. The deal is pending International Transfer Certificate approval. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Eugene is a great addition to the overall squad,” Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese said. “He is a young and talented player who can give the team a different look in attack.”

Starikov, 28, began playing in the USL Premier Development League in 2008 at IMG Academy Bradenton, scoring five goals for the club before moving to Russia’s elite, Zenit Saint Petersburg. Staying in the Russian Premier League, he then went on loan to Tom Tomsk and Rostov, where he score four goals between the two clubs.

Starikov joins the Cosmos after playing last season in the Ukrainian Premier League for Chornomorets Odesa, having 10 appearances and netting two goals for the club. He has already contributed to the New York Cosmos during preseason in their Dominican Republic tour, where he scored twice and added two assists in three matches.

“I have really enjoyed the preseason with the team and feel very comfortable with the group,” Starikov said. “Signing for such an iconic club it’s an honor and I look forward to having a successful season and to helping the team in any way I can.”

The Cosmos also announced the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Kalif Alhassan. The 26-year-old spent the 2016 NASL season with Tampa Bay. Prior to joining the Rowdies, he played over 1,800 minutes for Minnesota United, scoring four goals and adding six assists. Alhassan also played five seasons with the Portland Timbers.

“Kalif is a dynamic player who will help us be more competitive,” Savarese said. “He will add depth to our squad, as we look forward to preparing our 2017 season.”
