FC Edmonton has added former Northern Ireland international and Glasgow Rangers attacker Dean Shiels to the roster ahead of the 2017 NASL season.

The 32-year-old attacking midfielder most recently featured for League of Ireland side Dundalk F.C. in 2016 where he scored four goals in 16 matches for the club, including four appearances in the UEFA Europa League. Prior to that, Shiels played a key role at the Ibrox Stadium with Glasgow Rangers for four seasons from 2012-16, helping the club win three division titles (Scottish Third Division, League One and Championship) en route to a return to the Scottish Premiership.

"Dean's a goalscorer and a creative player who works at a level we would expect of someone at FC Edmonton. I’m delighted that Dean has joined our club,” FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller stated. “Dean did very well for my old club Rangers and has had a fantastic career."

Shiels began his career with Arsenal as a youth from 2001-04 before making his name in Scotland with Hibernian, scoring 24 goals in 117 appearances for Hibs over five seasons. The Magherafelt, Northern Ireland product then moved to Doncaster Rovers in 2009, where he connected with now-current FC Edmonton teammate Tomi Ameobi.

After three years at Doncaster and parts of two seasons with Kilmarnock, Sheils made his move to then-Scottish Third Division side Rangers in 2012 and earned a call-up back to the Northern Ireland national team that year, scoring his first international goal in a 1-1 draw against Luxembourg. Shiels has made a total of 14 appearances for his country from 2005-12, scoring one goal.

“I’ve done a lot of research on Dean, spoke to a lot of people in Scotland about him and talked with Albert Watson who knows him as well. Everything came back glowing,” Miller said. “He’s a leader and a quality player who wants to attack and score goals, so I’m very excited to have Dean here.”
