FC Edmonton announced Monday the addition of Canadian international defender/midfielder Adam Straith to the club for the upcoming NASL season.

Born and raised on Vancouver Island in Victoria, B.C. and a product of the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency Program, Straith joins FC Edmonton with a wealth of international experience playing in Europe and with the Canadian Men’s National Team. The 26-year-old provides the club with plenty of utility and the ability to play in both defence and midfield as a centre-back or holding midfielder.

“Adam could be a very important signing for us because he can play in a variety of positions,” FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. “He’s a quality, experienced professional who has over 40 caps with Canada and when I spoke to him about coming to Edmonton he was very enthusiastic. Adam is another experienced player joining our club that instantly becomes a leader in this squad.”

Straith made his senior debut in October of 2009 with FC Energie Cottbus against FC St. Pauli in 2. Bundesliga, Germany’s second-divison, and scored his first senior goal that match. After five more years in Germany, Straith moved to Norway where he played alongside current FC Edmonton defender Netan Sansara at Fredrikstad FK.

In June of 2013, Straith joined FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller and the Canadian Men’s National Team as part of Canada’s 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad in the United States when Miller was the interim manager for Canada.

“The competition for places within FC Edmonton is as good as its been in the club’s history,” Miller said. “It’s fantastic that we have four Canadian internationals with FC Edmonton heading into the season. Adam’s arrival completes our squad for the forseeable future and I’m excited to head into Manchester and the NASL Spring Season with this group of players.”
