TEAM OF THE WEEK | Fall Season Week 8

FC Edmonton's Matt VanOekel, Fort Lauderdale's Amauri, and Carolina's Omar Bravo highlight the top performers in Week 8

FC Edmonton goalkeeper Matt VanOekel continued his run of stellar form, stonewalling the Tampa Bay Rowdies in a key win for the Eddies. Fort Lauderdale Strikers forward Amauri and Carolina RailHawks forward Omar Bravo provided a lift and goals for their teams in victories. . 

See which other pleyers were top performers and made the Team of the Week: 

GK: Matt VanOekel (FC Edmonton) – He made nine saves to keep a league-leading 10th shutout against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in a 1-0 win. The win boosted FC Edmonton to the top of the Fall Season and Combined Standings and netted VanOekel Player of the Week honors.  

DEF: Mechack Jérôme (Jacksonville Armada FC) – The Haitian international helped Jacksonville grab four points in its two games in Week 8. He won four duels and two tackles, while making three clearances and four interceptions in a 1-1 draw with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on Wednesday. He then helped the club to a 0-0 draw against Minnesota United, completing 66 of his 70 pass attempts.

DEF: Steven Miller (Carolina RailHawks) – He scored the equalizing goal on a lofted shot over the head of Indy Eleven goalkeeper Jon Busch. He also was strong at the back, winning his two tackle attempts and four duels as well as two interceptions in the 3-2 win.  

DEF: Adam Eckersley (FC Edmonton) – The Eddies kept another clean sheet and Eckersley was a key reason why, winning three tackles and six duels. The defender also made six clearances with two interceptions in the win over Tampa Bay.  

MID: Ariel Martinez (Miami FC) – The Cuban international helped Miami complete its 2-1 comeback win against Rayo OKC when his half volley looped over goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes and into the back of the net for the game-winner in stoppage time.

MID: Ben Speas (Minnesota United) – In a Wednesday night victory, Speas took advantage of an errant backpass to score and then was involved in the Loons’ second goal in a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies. He went on to create two chances against Jacksonville in the scoreless draw.

MID: Jose Angulo (Fort Lauderdale Strikers) – He scored the opening goal in the Strikers’ 1-1 draw with Jacksonville on Wednesday and then provided the assist on the first goal at Central Broward Stadium in a 3-1 win on Saturday against Ottawa Fury FC. His backheel pass led to Amauri’s opener.

MID: Andrés Flores (New York Cosmos) – With the Cosmos seemingly headed for a draw against Puerto Rico FC, the Salvadoran international unleashed a shot from distance for a game-winning goal in stoppage time for a 2-1 win.

FWD: Amauri (Fort Lauderdale Strikers) – The Italian international opened the scoring against Ottawa and then, with the score tied, completed a stunning bicycle-kick attempt to lead the Strikers to victory.

FWD: Jairo Arrieta (New York Cosmos) – The Costa Rican international scored New York’s equalizer against Puerto Rico in the win.

FWD: Omar Bravo (Carolina RailHawks) – The Mexican star scored the game-winning goal against Indy Eleven and was a dangerous threat throughout against the Spring Season Champions.
