Despite a valiant effort, the New York Cosmos bowed out of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night, dropping a 3-2 result to the visiting New England Revolution at Belson Stadium. U.S international Teal Bunbury’s finish in the 83rd minute ended up being the difference in a game that the Cosmos actually led midway through the second half.

The hosts were the better side in the first half, creating a number of chances and testing Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. In the 38th minute, the Cosmos finally got the goal they deserved, with Ruben Bover firing home after a neat flick from teammate Jairo Arrieta. Just five minutes later, though, the visitors were level through Bunbury, who scored the first of two goals just before halftime.

With the game even at 1-1 early in the second half, Sebastian Guenzatti snuck a low shot past Shuttleworth to put the Cosmos up by a goal. The lead lasted until the 75th minute when substitute forward Kei Kamara notched the equalizer for the Revolution. After being played in on goal, Kamara’s initial attempt was blocked by Roversio, but the Sierra Leone international quickly dispatched the rebound to even the score at 2-2.

Bunbury then finished off the Cosmos eight minutes later, smashing a shot into the top corner after receiving a perfect pass from Kamara. The loss marked the second straight year that the Cosmos have been eliminated from the Cup in the Round of 16.
