Ottawa, New York Set For Top-Of-The-Table Clash On NASL Wednesday Night Soccer on ONE World Sports

Fury FC can build its Fall Season lead with a victory
NASL Staff | Aug 25, 2015

In what could be the most important matchup to date in the NASL Fall Season, the Spring Season Champion New York Cosmos visit league-leading Ottawa Fury FC on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET at TD Place. The clash will be available to all viewers in the U.S. and Canada on ONEWorldSports.com.

The Cosmos, who sit atop the league’s Combined Standings with 35 points, bring a six-game unbeaten streak with them to Ottawa, where Fury FC has put together an impressive Fall Season thus far. With 19 points, the Canadian side sits four points clear of four clubs - the Cosmos, Atlanta Silverbacks, Minnesota United FC, and FC Edmonton - in the Fall Season Standings going into Wednesday’s game.

While the Cosmos already have a spot in The Championship, the league’s four-team postseason tournament, by virtue of winning the Spring Season, head coach Giovanni Savarese’s side will want to keep its advantage in the Combined Standings to earn the top overall seed.

For Fury FC, they are simply trying to get to the postseason. To date, Ottawa has done an excellent job of putting itself in a position to reach The Championship, and can qualify one of two ways. Head coach Marc Dos Santos’ side would reach the postseason automatically if it were to win the Fall Season, or it could qualify via the Combined Standings, where it currently holds the second best overall record.

Despite suffering a loss in its last game, Ottawa has every reason to be confident going into Wednesday’s encounter against the Cosmos. Prior to their 2-1 loss to Minnesota United on August 15, Fury FC posted a remarkable 12-game unbeaten streak that featured seven shutouts. The club’s goalkeeper, French veteran Romuald Peiser, and center back pairing of Rafael Alves and Colin Falvey has formed the league’s top defensive unit, which could prove difficult for the Cosmos to beat on Wednesday night.

New York is growing in confidence in front of goal, however. The Cosmos have found the net eight times in their last three games, highlighted by last Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Carolina RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park. Leo Fernandes has scored three goals in his last three games, while fellow midfielder Adam Moffat has tallied twice over that same span.

One thing is for sure – three points will go a long way for each team. With a win, Ottawa would open up a seven-point advantage in the Fall Season Standings and would pull within two points of the Cosmos in the Combined Standings. On the other hand, should the Cosmos grab three points at TD Place, they would increase their lead in the Combined Standings to eight points and pull within a point of Fury FC in the Fall Season Standings.
