FC Edmonton defender Eddie Edward has started in all but one game for the Eddies in the 2015 North American Soccer League (NASL) Spring Season and Amway Canadian Championship (ACC).

The 26-year-old Canadian defender arrived in Edmonton prior to the 2013 NASL season, and through hard work and a great working relationship with head coach Colin Miller, Edward has steadily progressed and become a key player for the Eddies.

Edward is a consistent and skilled player, but he is not done working to improve and develop because both him and Miller know that he can get even better.

“I am my harshest critic,” Edward said. “I expect more of myself to continue to develop. I think I could do more getting forward and helping out the team in terms of crosses and getting assists.”

Miller praises Edward’s many qualities and strengths while acknowledging where the defender can improve in order to be the player that he believes Edward can be if he remains committed to his development.

“Eddie has been one of our most consistent players since I’ve arrived at the club,” Miller said. “In one-versus-one defending, Eddie is as good as good as anybody in our league and pace-wise he is as quick as anybody. His final ball and speed of play are things where we continue to work with Eddie, but if he really applies himself, I think that he can go to the next level.”

Edward prefers his usual right back spot, but is committed to playing wherever the team and Miller need him.

“Eddie played in central midfield for us against Montreal in the ACC last year and one or two other times he’s filled in for us there and hasn't looked out of place,” Miller added. “That shows that there is more to Eddie than just being a right fullback.”

Edward’s professional career began with Major League Soccer (MLS) side FC Dallas, where he spent two seasons and appeared in one match before heading to NASL side Puerto Rico Islanders. His experience in MLS was “unbelievable,” teaching him how to become a true professional all around before making his move to the league where he has now been for four seasons.

Edward names this year’s squad as one of his favourites because of how hard each player plays for each other as well as friendships that extend beyond the pitch. These characteristics are something Edward believes will help the team achieve success this season.

“We are always hanging out because we really enjoy each other’s company,” Edward explained. “You can see it on the field when we work hard and go into tackles for one another. We don't stop fighting and I think that plays a huge part in our future success because we are going to get better, and as long as we continue to fight for one another, the rest should take care of itself.”

FC Edmonton resumes North American Soccer League (NASL) competition on July 5, 2015 at Shell Place in Fort McMurray, AB against San Antonio Scorpions. Kick-off in the match is set for 2:00 p.m. MT.
