Marcos Senna, New York Cosmos Aim To Continue Success In Atlanta

New York Cosmos have never lost against Atlanta in Silverbacks Park, and Marcos Senna has scored two of the game-winning goals

With the New York Cosmos headed to Atlanta, it’s a trip that has brought them success in the past.

The Cosmos have never lost in Atlanta, or to the Silverbacks overall, since the sides have faced off in 2013. A trip to Silverbacks Park has also brought silverware the Cosmos’ way, with a 1-0 victory to lift the Soccer Bowl trophy in ’13.

One player that has been with the Cosmos since their reboot and the championship triumph is Marcos Senna. He has certainly enjoyed his nights against the Silverbacks, scoring three goals in his career against them - two of them game-winners -  including the lone tally to win the title.

"This was an incredible moment for me,” Senna told NASL.com. “It was the year the Cosmos returned. Playing for the club that year and scoring that goal, it doesn’t get any better than that. I still remember everything about that goal and that night. I look back on it fondly.”

The key to Senna and the Cosmos’ strong performances down South has been down to bringing the right mentality. It also may be down to the way the teams match up on the pitch, noted Senna.

"For whatever reason – whether it is their systems or styles of play – there are certain teams that we struggle with and others we always perform well against,” he said. “We have had some difficult matches against Carolina, for example, but we have always performed well against Atlanta. I hope it continues that way this weekend."

To do so, the Cosmos will have to stop a Silverbacks side that is brimmng with confidence. Unbeaten in three matches, like the Cosmos, Atlanta most recently defeated the Carolina RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park.

If New York (2-1-0, seven points) can continue to play as they have in the previous meetings in the past, the Cosmos should be able to find all three points away from home for the second time this season.

“We just need to continue on the road we’re on,” Senna said. “We’ve played three matches, and we haven’t lost any of them. We’ll be fighting to maintain our place at the top of the standings this weekend.

“If we can stay on the track we’re on, and continue to concentrate against Atlanta, I think we can win again.”

The Cosmos midfielder also believes the squad is even stronger, which will make Atlanta’s job of securing their first-ever win against New York that much tougher.

This season we’ve brought in some great players, and the arrival of Raúl is a huge boost.” Senna said. “I think this year we’re a little stronger in each game.”

And could Senna, a proven thorn in the side of the Silverbacks (1-2-0, five points), score the winner again?

“Honestly I’m just thrilled when the team wins,” he added. “If I score, fantastic, but winning is what’s important.

The Cosmos can make it four out of four in Atlanta when the sides kick off on Saturday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m.
