The rematch between the league-leading New York Cosmos and the Carolina RailHawks is set for Saturday at Hofstra University at 7pm ET and kicks off a crucial Week 11 of NASL Fall Season action with all teams still in the hunt for a berth at NASL Soccer Bowl 2013 on November 9.
The Cosmos, who are atop the standings with 21 points and riding a seven-game unbeaten streak, look to avenge their only loss of the season against the RailHawks, who currently sit in third place in the table on goal difference, level with three other teams (Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Minnesota United FC) with 14 points. But the RailHawks have not won on the road in their last 13 games.
The last time both clubs met was on August 17 with Carolina posting a 3-0 shutout over New York at WakeMed Soccer Park.
“It’s an exciting weekend, going into New York and facing the top team,” said RailHawks coach Colin Clarke. “We are getting some guys back from injury so it’s going to be a good matchup between two quality teams.”
The Cosmos-RailHawks encounter airs live on SNY TV and www.OneWorldSports.com/watch. Prior registration is required before accessing the live One World Sports stream, or viewers can tune in live to SNY, the national network partner of the Cosmos. The game is not available through Ustream.
NASL Week 11 action continues on Saturday with the Florida derby as the Fort Lauderdale Strikers visit the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium in St Petersburg at 7.30pm ET live at www.NASL.com. The match-up is the conclusion of the seasonal state rivalry clash known as the Coastal Cup, with the Rowdies having won the last three and able to clinch their fourth consecutive crown with a win or draw.
“They will be a completely different team this time and they will not underestimate us again,” said Strikers coach Günter Kronsteiner, whose side defeated the Rowdies 2-1 last week in Fort Lauderdale. “This is what we need to do in order to be successful. If we play against the Rowdies the same way we played them in the first half last week, then we have a chance.”
Also on Saturday, the Atlanta Silverbacks face visiting Minnesota United FC at the site of this year’s NASL Soccer Bowl at 7.30pm ET. The 2013 Spring Season title winners are also searching for their first-ever victory at home against Minnesota.
“With the result last weekend we know we have a big uphill battle to climb, we just look at it as one of four important games,” said United coach, Manny Lagos, who’s club dropped a 1-0 decision last week to the first-place Cosmos. “That old cliché, we have to take what we did well and continue to do it well and improve on what we did in the Cosmos game and mentally get back at it. I think we can go on a run and here do this, but we have to make sure we are mentally ready.”
Rounding out Week 11 play on Sunday afternoon, the San Antonio Scorpions greet FC Edmonton at Toyota Field. The 2.30pm ET match-up can also be watched on locally MeTV-KSAT 12.2 and listened to on Spanish Language Radio: 102.3 FM-San Antonio and Radio Formula 1500 AM Boerne.
“FC Edmonton is very organized and disciplined defensively,” said Scorpions interim coach Alen Marcina, whose side have won all three of their home encounters against the Eddies in the head-to-head series. “They are a difficult team to break down, but we will come out trying to get three points no matter what. We have won two straight games at home, and we want to make it three.”
This weekend’s games from Atlanta, San Antonio and Tampa Bay can be seen via a live stream at www.NASL.com and on iOS and Android devices by downloading the Ustream App.
