The NASL's San Antonio Scorpions will have an opportunity to showcase their talent against a good Mexican side Saturday night at Toyota Field when they take on Dorados de Sinaloa at 7:30 pm.
Dorados will be the second Mexican team to play an international friendly match in the Alamo City this season, following Tigres UANL who beat the Scorpions on July 6.
Dorados currently play in the Ascenso MX, which is the second tier of Mexican soccer. Founded in August of 2003, they hold the distinction as the youngest club in Mexican soccer history to play in the Liga MX, the Mexican first division. The Ascenso MX has an opening (Apertura) season and a closing (Clausura) season, and the champions of each season play each other annually in a two-match playoff for the right to be promoted to Liga MX. Dorados earned the right to play in this playoff just one year after their founding by winning the 2003 Apertura championship. They went on to win the ensuing playoff and secured promotion by defeating their bitter rivals, Club León, by an aggregate score of 5-4. In the Clausura 2013 season, which was the most recent season, Dorados finished ninth.
The Scorpions recently beat USL PDL side, Oklahoma City FC, 4-3 in a competitive friendly match at Toyota Field on July 14th. Hans Denissen, who ended the Spring Season on a goal-scoring tear, scored a hat trick in the match to help the Scorpions earn the win. Partial proceeds from the match will be donated to tornado victims in the Oklahoma City FC area.
Saturday’s matchup between the Scorpions and Dorados de Sinaloa will not be the first time these two sides have met before. In March of 2012, in preparation for their inaugural NASL season, the Scorpions took on Dorados in a pre-season friendly in Stockton, California, beating the Mexican side 3-0. Hans Denissen scored two goals in the match, while former Scorpion Pablo Campos scored the other.
Key Player - Hans Denissen – Denissen has done nothing but score and create goals recently, making him the most dangerous Scorpion with the soccer ball at his feet. Look for him to continue his great form against Dorados.
Wild Card – Tomasz Zahorski – The Polish international striker is on trial with the Scorpions and will be eligible to play against Dorados. Zahorski has 13 caps at the full international level with Poland and has scored one goal. The 6’3 forward will look to make quite a first impression.
Up Next: The Scorpions will have a bye weekend before opening their 2013 NASL Fall Season at Toyota Field on August 3rd at 7:30pm against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
