Midfielder Richie Menjivar, of the 2013 NASL Spring Champion Atlanta Silverbacks, played the entire game for El Salvador as the team defeated Haiti, 1-0, in Group B action and secured its berth into the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinals on Monday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Tex.
Forward Rodolfo Zelaya scored the only goal of the match for El Salvador in the 74th minute after his penalty kick shot was saved by the Haitian goalkeeper Frandy Montrévil, however Zelaya got the rebound to kick in the game-winner.
Zelaya was fouled by the Haitian defender Mechack Jerome inside the 18-yard box which resulted in Puerto Rican Referee Javier Santos calling the penalty kick in favor of El Salvador which extends its unbeaten streak against the Caribbean side to six matches.
The Cuscatlecos, who are competing in the quarterfinals for only the third time in the tournament history, could face either USA or Costa Rica in Baltimore, or Panama in Menjivar's home team city of Atlanta, depending on results from Rentschler Field in Hartford on Tuesday night.
In the other Group B encounter in Houston on Monday, FC Edmonton defender Carlyle Mitchell played the full 90 minutes for Trinidad & Tobago also progressed to the tournament’s quarterfinals after topping group leader Honduras 2-0.
The result, which is the first win at the Gold Cup since 2000, also gives the Soca Warriors a chance to meet the defending champion Mexico in the quarterfinals in Atlanta.
After missing the target with wide shots on two occasions early, forward Kenwyne Jones had a one-on-one with the Honduran goalkeeper Kevin Hernandez in the 31st minute however his shot was saved.
Seven minutes later, Honduras was left with 10 players following the ejection defender Jose David Velasquez by the Mexican Referee Marco Rodriguez after he committed a hard foul on Trinidad & Tobago forward Cornell Glen.
Three minutes into second half, Jones got his goal via a penalty kick after defender Orlin Orlando Peralta fouled foul Glen inside the 18-yard box.
Jones would also assist on the second goal, scored by midfielder Kevin Molino, in the 67th minute for the Soca Warriors who had not beaten the Catrachos since 2001.
