Midfielder Richie Menjivar, of the 2013 NASL Spring Champion Atlanta Silverbacks, played the entire game for El Salvador as the squad was beaten by a late Honduran goal, 1-0, in Group B of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Miami on Friday evening.
Claros, who had goal called back in the 20th minute of the first half for offside, scored the game-winner for Honduras during stoppage time to the delight of the crowd of 28,713 at Sun Life Stadium.
El Salvador’s best chance to score in the first half came in the 36th minute when midfielder William Osael Romero’s shot from outside the penalty area was saved by the Honduran goalkeeper Donis Escober. Meanwhile, seconds later on the other side of the field the Catrachos forward Rony Martinez had his shot saved by the Cuscatlecos goalkeeper Dagoberto Portillo.
In the second half, Honduras looked to open the scoring and almost did in the opening two minutes, however Martinez 18-yarder went over the cross bar, while midway through the half El Salvador forward Rodolfo Zelaya shot his free kick wide of the Honduran goal.
With two minutes remaining, the Cuscatlecos substitute Kevin Santamaria took a low shot that went past the Catrachos ‘keeper Escober however it hit the left post to remain scoreless until Claros notched his third international goal.
In an earlier group encounter, FC Edmonton defender Carlyle Mitchell played the full 90 minutes for Trinidad & Tobago in the 2-0 loss to Haiti, behind two goals from forward Jean Eudes Maurice.
After his first shot of the match was saved by Trinidad & Tobago’s goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams five minutes earlier, Maurice scored Haiti’s opening goal in the 16th minute off a rebound save following a shot from outside the penalty area by defender Kim Jaggy.
The Soca Warriors had two consecutive chances to level the score in a three-minute span but shots from defender Carlos Edwards (34th) and forward Darryl Roberts (37th) went over the cross bar and wide of goal, respectively of the Haitian goalkeeper Frandy Montrévil.
Trinidad & Tobago almost tied the match in the opening minute of the second half; however midfielder Keon Daniel’s header hit the right goal post.
Maurice scored his second goal of the match in the 53rd minute by knocking home a rebound clearance from Trinidad & Tobago’s Mitchell after a left side cross from midfielder Yves Desmarets.
Haiti held on for its first victory at the 2013 Gold Cup, while Trinidad & Tobago remains winless in group play after this loss and tying its opening encounter against El Salvador (2-2) on Monday.
Group B concludes on July 15 in Houston, Tex., when El Salvador faces Haiti to be followed by Trinidad & Tobago against Honduras.
The top two teams from each group as well as the two highest-seeded third-place finishers will advance to the quarterfinals.
