The NASL will be represented at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup as Atlanta Silverbacks midfielder Richie Menjivar and FC Edmonton defender Carlyle Mitchell were named to the 23-man final rosters for El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago, respectively.
FC Edmonton’s coach Colin Miller will lead Canada at the Confederation’s Tournament taking place across nine cities in the U.S. starting this weekend.
The current interim coach of his country, Miller will guide the Canadians at the 2013 Gold Cup opener on Sunday, July 7, when they face Group A opponent Martinique at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
“I feel very privileged and grateful to have been chosen to lead Canada into this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup,” said Miller. “I need to thank FC Edmonton’s organization for supporting me and allowing me to make the most of this amazing opportunity that the Canadian Soccer Association is entrusting me with.”
The Maple Leafs will then travel to Seattle, Wash. on July 11 to face defending champion Mexico, before concluding group play against Panama in Denver, Colo. on July 14.
Meanwhile, both El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago are in Group B, which may lead to Menjivar and Mitchell facing each other at the international level when the two national sides meet on July 8, in Harrison, N.J.
Menjivar, who made his debut with the Silverbacks during this NASL Spring Season, has six international caps with El Salvador and helped lead them in his first tournament to a third-place at the Central American Qualifier to the Gold Cup (Copa Centroamericana) this past January in Costa Rica.
“I’ve looked forward to this because we had to qualify in Costa Rica back in March,” said Menjivar. “It’s very exciting for me because it’s one of the biggest international tournaments for me so far, so I think it will be a good stepping-stone for me to continue towards the next level.”
Menjivar has been a instrumental part of the Silverbacks rise to the NASL Standings as he’s played in 10 games while scoring twice and dishing out an assist.
Mitchell has 18 appearances for Trinidad & Tobago since his debut in 2010 and guided them to second place at the Gold Cup’s Caribbean Qualifier (2012 Caribbean Cup) in Antigua & Barbuda.
Mitchell, who is returning from injury, played for Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Caledonia AIA in his native Trinidad & Tobago, has seen action in seven games this NASL Spring Season.
The remaining Group B matches will have Trinidad & Tobago meeting Haiti and then El Salvador taking on Honduras on July 12, at Miami Gardens, Fla. The group concludes three days later (July 15) in Houston, Tex, when El Salvador faces Haiti to be followed by Trinidad & Tobago against Honduras.
The top two teams from each group as well as the two highest-seeded third-place finishers will advance to the quarterfinals.
