A van full of Fort Lauderdale Strikers supporters raced up I-75 on Friday morning headed to Atlanta. The occasion? The Strikers first away trip of the 2013 Spring Season. It was third consecutive season local supporters group Flight 19 had organizaed such a trip to Silverbacks Park.
Flight 19 President Zach Reese sat down with NASL.com on Tuesday to discuss the road trip.
Why did you organize this trip?
- Atlanta is our second closest rival, and a drivable trip, so it's a no brainer for us. We've been to Atlanta 3 years in a row now and we've increased the number we've brought to the game each year. Our mission as supporters is to give our all for the Strikers, and if it's a reasonable cost/distance we always do our best to set up a road trip.
- We rented a van and 10 of us made the 10 and a half hour drive up on Thursday night, arriving on Friday morning. Some Striker Likers who live in and around Atlanta joined us in the stadium, making the overall crew around 20 people at the game. While F19 took the lead in organizing the trip, we always invite all Strikers supporters and fans to come along with us.
What was your experience like?
- Overall the experience was fantastic. As in the previous two years when we've gone to Atlanta, we planned a weekend of activities around the game to maximize our time there. In the past we've gone to Six Flags and spent a day on Lake Lanier. This time we took in a minor league baseball game up in Rome and stopped by Zoo Atlanta. As for the game itself, the result was nowhere near what we wanted from the Strikers, but we still had a great time. We sang and stood the whole match and had a nice back and forth with the home support. There is nothing quite like traveling to see your team on the road, whether it's a win, loss or draw.
Do you plan on any more road trips this year?
- Absolutely! We will be going to both away matches in St. Petersburg as well as the match in New York vs. the Cosmos in August to start the fall season. Of course should we find ourselves with a nearby match in the US Open Cup, that's always a possibility as well.
Fort Lauderdale's supporters are honored by NASL.com for the long drive and atmosphere they helped create at Silverbacks Park as our Fans of the Week. We should also mention the great passion shown by Silverbacks fans and the Atlanta Ultras in this clip.
The Silverbacks enjoyed a sell-out crowd on Saturday, and the atmosphere created by both sets of fans made it memorable night for all who attended.
