Tom Mulroy and Tim Robbie Q&A Recap
Posted on Wed, Dec 5, 2012

On Tuesday, December 5, Tom Mulroy, the Strikers new team president, and Tim Robbie sat down and answered questions from fans on Twitter and Facebook about their new roles with the team and information about the search for a long-term home for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Here is a recap of all the questions and answers.

Q: Tom, what in your previous experience makes you confident that being Team President is the right job for you, the players, and the fans?

A: "My entire life's road of soccer experience leads to working with a professional team. I signed my first professional contact at age 19 here with the Miami Toros before they were the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, and I've never looked back. I played professionally for 13 years, and for 12 of those years I worked in the front office. Beginning as a community relations director and then in the marketing department. When I retired from playing I started my own soccer marketing and promotions company which was very successful over the past 25 years and then sold the company to Traffic Sports 3 years ago. I believe that covers the business side of my experience. From a player standpoint, who can relate better to a player than another player? I hold my USSF A License as well as my NSCAA National Diploma. When you look like one, act like one and think like one, you probably are one. I think I'll be ok with the payers. From a fan standpoint, no one loves this game more than me. The fans will learn that everything I do, every day is for the success of our sport in a country where we are still fighting for mainstream status." - Tom Mulroy

Q: Tom, do you have a Twitter account?

A: You can follow the Strikers new team president on Twitter @SoccerTomMulroy

Q: Is this stadium talk a prelude towards a potential bid for an MLS team? What has Don Garber told you guys needs to happen to see the Strikers in MLS? How long before we join MLS?

A: "Our focus is on the success of the NASL. With the new franchises entering the league from Virginia, Ottawa and of course the New York Cosmos, growth has been dynamic. We don't view this as a competition with Tampa or Orlando. Our concern is the long-term viability of the Strikers here in South Florida. Our preference is to remain at a significantly renovated Lockhart Stadium, but we are exploring all avenues within South Florida." - Tim Robbie

"Today's announcement has nothing to do with MLS. It's about creating a sustainable business model and a home for our team and fans in South Florida we can all be proud of." - Tom Mulroy

Q: What ideas do you have in terms of marketing the team so that all of south Florida knows we have a soccer team?

A: "I would view our job like I would a political campaign. We have to reach out to everyone in South Florida to address their needs as a fan. One of the most important groups to reach are the youth soccer clubs from Jupiter all the way to Homestead." - Tom Mulroy

Q: What will you do differently this season to clinch a title?

A: "Looking at our performance last season, we need to improve on the road. If we perform on the road like we do at Lockhart, we'll win the Soccer Bowl." - Tom Mulroy

Q: Will you be doing anything new for the fans such as public interactions, meet and greets, and things of that nature?

A: "The 2013 Strikers will do more hand-shaking and relationship building than ever before." - Tom Mulroy
