The Fort Lauderdale Strikers have announced the re-signing of 2012 leading goal-scorer Mark Anderson for the 2013 season with a club option for 2014 and 2015. Anderson scored 13 goals in all competitions for the Strikers and was named to the NASL’s Best XI team in his first season as a professional.
“We are very excited to have re-signed Mark,” said Strikers head coach Daryl Shore. “He was a big part of our team in his rookie season and we are very happy to have him back with the red and yellow for 2013. Being able to keep a solid core group of guys together as we move forward is important and Mark is a big part of this group.”
Anderson finished the 2012 regular season with 11 goals in league play, the third most in the NASL. He also added two goals in the 2012 US Open Cup including a dramatic goal from midfield against the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS. You can see a video of the goal here.
“It’s been a long process, but it’s nice to finally come to an agreement,” said Anderson. “I’m looking forward to the future and hopefully winning a championship with the Strikers.”
Anderson was second on the Strikers in appearances among field players with 25, including being named a starter 19 times. He added three assists on the season as well.
“You don’t want to stand still, and to know that the club has aspirations of moving forward was a big part of my decision,” said Anderson. “We signed some core players like Matt (Glaeser), Walter (Restrepo), and Pecka who are key to moving forward, so that was a major factor as well.”
The 23-year-old midfielder came to the Strikers after playing four years with the Barry University Buccaneers and was named 2011 Daktronics DII National Soccer Player of the Year and 2011 Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for DII men's soccer.
