MIAMI, Fla. (August 3, 2012) — San Antonio Scorpions forward Pablo Campos has been named the North American Soccer League Player of the Month for July 2012, the league announced Friday.
Campos scored seven goals for the Scorpions in the month of July to help the Scorpions remain atop the NASL standings. The Brazilian forward finishes the month leading the league in goals with 15 and is just five goals away from matching the NASL’s Golden Boot winner Etienne Barbara’s goal total from last season.
In the vote conducted by 20 media members from NASL markets, Campos was selected ahead of Fort Lauderdale’s Walter Restrepo and Tampa Bay’s Mike Ambersley gaining 14 first place votes. Restrepo finished second in the balloting and Ambersley third.
“I’ve been lucky enough to put goals in the back of the net and I’m very appreciative of the team and we’re all playing well at the right time,” said Campos. “It’s very exciting to see the team improve from where we started, especially at home and I think that has given us a lot of confidence.”
Campos scored twice on the road against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on July 14, including a stoppage time goal that helped the Scorpions earn a dramatic 2-2 road draw. A week later against the Strikers at home on July 21, Campos scored the game’s lone goal in a Scorpions 1-0 victory against the Strikers.
In the Scorpions’ July 28 match against the Carolina RailHawks, Campos ended the month with a bang, scoring four goals in San Antonio’s 8-0 rout over Carolina. Three of those goals came during the Scorpions’ six-goal second half.
Pablo Campos, who has been named NASL Offensive Player of the Week four times this season, becomes the first Scorpion in franchise history to earn NASL Player of the Month honors.
