From Serra Leone, Roberts and his family were forced to relocate following civil unrest in the country. He and his father came to Canada, where Roberts' passion for soccer continued to grow. However, in high school, he decided to quit soccer all together and focus on his academics and also American football. After a stint with the Edmonton Eskimos, he decided to return to soccer when he went to college at NAIT. After a year at NAIT, he was invited to join the FC Edmonton Reserves team in the summer of 2012.
