August 2003 - Atlanta Cup

  • Posted by ALAsoccer to Al.com's soccer forum on 8/31/2003.
Atlanta Cup is second largest youth soccer tournament in America. Of the 25 Alabama teams participating, six teams were semifinalists and one team is left in tomorrow's final. Congratulations to Jets 88 Blue who made it to the U16 Boys B division final and good luck tomorrow!  (Follow-up - Jets lose to Norcross Fury Gold in overtime. Final score 2-1.) The results are found at http://www.atlantacup.com/
    The 6 semi-finalists are:
    • U11 Boys Div A: Kicks 93 Red
    • U15 Boys Div B: Kicks 89
    • U15 Girls Div A: NAU Samba FC
    • U19 Girls Div A: Attack 86
    • U19 Girls Div B: Angels 86
    • U19 Girls Div C: Lady Kicks 86.

The Angels 90 and Kicks 87 both were fifth in points in the their divisions. A break here or there and they would have also made the semi-finals.

  • Samba 89 advanced to the semi finals in the A bracket of the Atlanta Cup this weekend:
    Samba 3 United Quest 0
    Samba 3 Forsythe Rowdies 0
    Samba 1 AFC Lightning 0
Samba lost to Top Hat Gold (Region III Champions) in the semi finals 4-1. The Top Hat striker is the starting striker for the U16 National Team and scored 3 of the Top Hat four goals.

June 2003 - Regionals

  • Samba did not advance but we had a great Regional experience. Beat Arkansas 1-0. Lost to La (NOSA) 1-0. Tied SC (St Giles Extreme) 1-1. We played some of our best soccer ever. The two goals we gave up were on a PK and a corner kick. Otherwise we shut everyone down. We had shots off the post, off the cross bar and in the box at the keeper but ball would not go down. We possessed the ball most of every game and had 3-1 ratio on corner kicks.
NOSA lost to Top Hat 2-1 in the semi. Top Hat beat Dallas Sting 2-1 in the finals. We were that close. We won a lot of respect for the club and gained the confidence that we can play at this level if we prepare for it. This was a great confidence booster going into next season. If you have never been there, the Regionals are everything you have heard and then some. Many thanks to our good friends around the Region who helped us prepare.
See you in Austin, Texas next year.
    Cheers,
    Samba FC

  • For the second year in a row the U19 Lady Kicks from North Alabama make it to the Finals at Regionals. They lost 3-0 to Georgia in the finals on July 1st. A girls team from Alabama has never won Regionals.  http://www.gasoccer.org/gysacup/regionals/19ga.html

April 2003

  • Congratulations to the Lady Kicks '91 and the Kicks '92 Boys for their successful weekends at the TNFC Spring Cup! The Lady Kicks were winners of the Girls U12 A division, and the Kicks '92 Boys were Co-Champions (Final game was cancelled due to bad weather) with the ERSA Express in the Boys U11 A division.
  • Congratulations to the Lady Kicks '91. They traveled to Franklin, TN this past weekend (April 6,7) for the TNFC Spring Cup Tournament and were Tournament Champions in the Girls U12 A Division. Game 1 the Kicks played Diadora Lady Impact form Knoxville; This was a well-fought game where the Kicks came out on top 1-0. In game two, they played the Rochester Lightning 91 form Rochester Michigan. After surrendering the first goal of the game, the Kicks fought back to win the game 2-1. Game three Sunday morning had them matched up with the United Quest from Atlanta Georgia. The Kicks handled the Quest with relative ease winning 4-0. This placed the Kicks into the finals against defending Champions TNFC Lady Rhythm (Ranked 23rd in the Nation, and 6th in Region III). TNFC had not given up a goal in any of their three bracket games winning 4-0, 5-0, 4-0 respectively. This was certainly going to be a tough opponent. The Kicks took the lead early scoring 10 minutes into the game off a nice piece of passing down the flank with the goal coming of a cross from the right side. The Kicks went up 2-0 five minuets later when they caught TNFC napping on a short corner. TNFC fought right back and scored 3 minutes later. It was a long hard fought battle for the rest of the half ending at 2-1. The second half started out evenly, with both teams having a few scoring chances. Fifteen minutes into the second half of the game, lighting struck and the game was postponed. Rain soon followed and the game was called early with the final score 2-1 Kicks. Lessons learned on going up early and holding on :-) Congratulations to the Lady Kicks '91 as they win their 3rd tournament of the season.
  • The Kicks '92 Boys are tournament Champions again. After recently winning the Memphis Blowout tournament in Memphis March 22, 23, the Kicks '92 maintained their national ranking and undefeated Spring Tournament play this past weekend in Franklin, TN at the TNFC Spring Classic in the Boys U11 A division. In game one, they defeated the tournament host team, TNFC Premier 5-3. In Game 2, they defeated the Diadora Impact of out Knoxville 3-2 and advanced to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, they were up 1-0 at the half over the Evansville Elite Flames from Indiana, and unfortunately due to bad weather the game was called and after a 10 minute waiting period the game was declared over and the Kicks were game winners by tournament rule. Unfortunately, there was no Final game to be played due to the bad weather and the Kicks 92 had to settle with Tournament Co Championship with the ERSA Express out of Chattanooga, winners in the other semi final, also cut short due to weather (2-1 in the second half). The boys showed great discipline and intensity playing strong two tournaments in a row and lifted their level of play with each game. Congratulations boys!!! A special thanks to Alex Clay and Coach Henry Mpagi of the HSC Blue 92, for Alex's massive contributions as a guest player over the weekend.

March 2003

  • Kicks 92 U11 Boys team win the Inaugural Memphis Blowout Tournament.  They defeated the JFC 92 (Jackson Futbol Club, MS - recent winners of the Vulcan Cup in Birmingham) 2-1 in the semi-finals, and defeated MFC 92 (Memphis Futbol Club) 2-0 in
the finals. The kids played great and had a lot of fun.
  • Game 1 the Kicks played to top ranked team from Tennessee, the Memphis Futbol Club (MFC) 92 (ranked 16 in Region III). This was a well fought game where the Kicks pulled off a miraculous comeback coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the final 90 seconds of the game to score two crucial goals to tie the game. In game two, they defeated the Germantown Fury 92 3-0. Game three in the semi finals they faced an extremely talented opponent in the Jackson Futbol Club (JFC) 92, (the top team in Mississippi (ranked 15 in Region III), recent Champions of the Vulcan Cup in Birmingham, AL). This was a tough battle. The Kicks went down 1-0 with 9 minutes left in the game, but mustered up the courage to pull off another final minute heroics finish by scoring with three minutes left in the game to tie it, and then again in the final minute of the game to seal the victory. In the finals they had a rematch against the MFC 92 again, an outstanding team. This time the Kicks took the lead early scoring 20 seconds into the game. It was a long hard fought battle, but the Kicks prevailed and scored again in the final minute of the game to seal the victory winning 2-0.
