.. a brief report
on what went on at the ASA Board Meeting Saturday, January 11th, 2003
Financial:
The state organization has employed a CPA firm to do a
review of past finances, do monthly reviews, bank reconciliation, file
taxes, etc.
A different firm is now contracted with to do payroll,
payroll deductions, withholdings, etc.
Due to some fees being paid early last year (01/02) and
an accounting convention on recording revenue, the state will show on
paper a profit of $45,400 for 01/02 and a corresponding loss for 02/03. We
have an annual budget (02/03) of $531,000 and a $130,000 reserve.
I checked to see how much is budgeted for ODP and where
the money for the ODP budget comes from. I was pleased to see that all the
funding for ODP comes from within that group. It is not funded by the
general membership, our tournaments or other sources. ODP expects to take
in and then spend an annual budget of just over $100,000 this year.
State Director of
Coaching:
We are in the process of conducting a performance
review for the Director of Coaching. Each ASA board member will have the
opportunity to provide feedback as will all club presidents and directors
of coaching. Ron and the Executive Management committee will gather the
feedback and use it to help them shape the review.
State Association Office
Changes:
Lynn
Bertovic is being named
ASA office manager. This should help give better
direction to the functioning of the office and for folks like us, out in
the hinterland, give us a person to direct things to that can then be
handled, assigned to one of the office staff, or sent out to the proper
board member for action. The change to an office manager will
require no increase in the ASA budget.
Alan Schweer, from the American Soccer Club, will
become the new Vice-President for Youth Soccer when Ron Evans becomes ASA
President on February 10th, 2003.
Referees:
New recommendation is that refs be paid on the field
for state league games, since that is what we do for other league play.
Schedules for 2003:
Both the League Organizing Committee and the Executive
Board are looking at modifications to the Fall 2003 Schedule. We hope to
propose a calendar that would allow the Division I, II, III, and Adult
State Championships to be played in the first three weekends of November
2003, rather than have two of them played in December.
ODP:
ODP Winter Event for Boys was held in Huntsville a week
ago and seemed to be a success. Alabama pool players were invited in,
given a fitness test, held a training session, and played 2 games against
Tennessee ODP teams. From my vantage point things went pretty well. Pool
will now be cut to teams. Players will know by Wed whether they are still
in the program or not. There will be another boys training session on the
23rd of January.
A girls ODP Winter event is planned in Huntsville for
the first weekend in February following the same format as used for the
boys.
Upcoming Meetings:
The Planning meeting is January 25th at 1:30pm in
Birmingham at the AmeriSuites Hotel on Highway 280. The meeting is
open to all club presidents, league administrators and club Directors of
Coaching.
The state's Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held
March 16th, 2003 and is open to all members of ASA.
